Gilbert’s Equestrian

01885 483942

My name is Penny Gilbert and I have lived locally to Bromyard for most of my adult life. I’m a mother of five and a grandmother to nine! I love horse riding, spending time in my garden and soaking up the beautiful countryside in which we live – especially at this time of year.

I started Gilbert’s Equestrian and Country 11 years ago under the then name of Gilbert’s Animal Feeds. The shop is located on the premises of the other Bromyard Gilbert’s – Gilbert’s Fruit and Veg - which is owned by my husband, Peter. At the time I set up the business I wanted to supply animal feeds to the large rural community surrounding Bromyard. However, as the business became established it soon evolved into saddlery and other horse related products – covering everyone from happy hackers to top competition riders. We also supply country clothing (not just for horsey types!), pet supplies, and have recently opened a new small garden centre which is really exciting.

As time has gone on, I wanted to become a shop for everyone, emphasising that you don’t have to just be horsey to shop here. We now stock range of country clothing for men and women offering state-of-the-art technical fabrics which are both functional and fashionable. Much of the clothing and foot wear is perfect for dog walking and country living in general.

While the feed side of the business has reduced (although dog, cat, bird and small animal feed is very much still available), we have expanded in other ways. Last summer with Covid-19 and lockdown we were fortunate to be able to remain open because we were viewed as an essential service although our trade suffered desperately, as with so many other small businesses. To try and boost business and survive the pandemic, I started selling plants in the car park as people stuck at home were enjoying spending time in their gardens. We saw a great response from local shoppers and it was lovely seeing many children also taking a keen interest.

The government then awarded all small businesses a grant and I took the opportunity to put the money back into the business and the town by creating a permanent garden hut next to the Gilbert’s car park where I sell all sorts of lovely gifts, candles, napkins and much more - oh and, of course, gardening equipment and plants! All the plants are grown locally as I’m keen to keep money in the local area and support other small Herefordshire and Worcestershire businesses.

The equestrian side of the business also continues on with many local riders particularly taking advantage of the Gilbert’s horse rug washing and repair service. We are also qualified riding hat and body protector fitters.

I try to be a place where people feel they’ve had a great experience. So often customers will come in and put the kettle on for a cuppa and chat while they browse. I always try to take feedback on what people would like to see in the store and if there is something I haven’t got I can usually source it. I also pride myself on the excellent results we achieve through our rug washing service. We have a dedicated industrial machine that gives a deep clean while preserving the integrity of the rug. After all, who wants to wash a horse rug at home?!

Yes to both! Our website is also an online shop and can be found at

Our Facebook page can be found at @GEC.Bromyard

On Instagram we are at gilberts_equestrian

Our opening hours are 9.30am until 5pm although I am happy to cater for after-hours shoppers by prior arrangement and can do local deliveries if specially requested.

My aim is to add to the Bromyard high street in a positive way and create a pleasant shopping experience.

I can offer knowledgeable advice and speak a lot from my own experience as I’m a keen horse rider/owner and also have a keen interest in plants and gardening.

The shop is located at 34 Rowberry St, Bromyard, HR7 4DT. It can also be accessed by walking through to the back car park via Gilbert’s Fruit and Veg on the high street. Please do stop by, we’d love to see you!
